Frost and snow make it difficult to garden in the MacKenzie so he decided to make wire sheep and barbed wire balls to with stand the harsh conditions of the area which is over 700m above sea level. So now the front of the Lodge has flocks of sheep amongst a James MacKenzie story which the public can view and learn about the History and Legends of the Famous sheep russler James MacKenzie. John got wire from a friend so set about making wire balls in all sizes and now both galvanized and rusty barbed and plain wire balls sit on the front lawn for tourists to see, as they travel through the MacKenzie Basin. Wire art products can be viewed and purchased from Lake Tekapo Luxury Lodge, or at Garden Fetes. John van Beek – Born The Netherlands 1950. Primary School – Le Bons Bay, Lincoln, Rangiora.
